Disadvantages Of Coconut Water You Should Be Aware Of

Disadvantages Of Coconut Water
AdTech Ad

1. It Is Not The Ideal Drink For Athletes:

In case you prefer coconut water for rehydration immediately post work out, then you rather drink plain water. Because the amount of sodium plain water contains is unarguably more than that present in coconut water. And hey, it is sodium that aids rehydration, right?
Also, when compared with certain sports energy drinks, coconut water is way low on carbohydrate content but ten times high in potassium content. Coconut water just contains one-tenth the sodium when compared with other sports drinks. (1)

2. Ups Your Blood Sugar Levels:

Now that’s something very undesirable, isn’t it? While the rest of the world is sweating out to decrease their blood sugar levels, I don’t think you would want to do something opposite.
Though coconut water doesn’t contain as much sugar as many sports drinks and fruit juices, it does contain many carbohydrates, and hence, many calories. (2)
Now, ‘calories’ would be a harmless term only if they are low, right? This is one reason why diabetics and people with high blood sugar shouldn’t take this beverage so seriously.

3. Not Good For People Vulnerable To Allergies:

Coconut is basically a tree nut. Hence certain people who consume coconut water might be prone to tree nut allergies as well as other forms of allergy. The understatement is coconut water should be kept away from people who are prone to allergies. (3)

4. Possesses Diuretic Properties:

This is another disadvantage when you consume too much of coconut water. Coconut water has diuretic properties, which means too much of its consumption might require you to take a break a number of times. Although a mild amount of coconut water has hydrating properties, too much of it might actually dehydrate the body. (4)

5. Should Be Consumed Immediately After Opening:

The reason coconut drink, or any drink for that matter, is considered a healthy drink is because of its high nutrient content. But coconut water, once exposed to air, starts fermenting and immediately loses its nutritional value. (5) And what do you call a drink that has no nutritional value?
Definitely not a healthy drink.

6. Might Act As A Laxative:

Too much of coconut water consumption can be dangerous. Drinking too much of it can have laxative effects on your digestive system. Since coconut water is a natural laxative, it might not be suitable for some people who have problem with their bowel movements. Hence, care should be taken before consuming a large amount of coconut water. (6)

7. Might Induce Weight Gain:

Now that’s something you definitely aren’t going to like, are you? Too much consumption of coconut water might actually increase your weight. And here’s how.
Coconut water contains carbohydrates and electrolytes. This might definitely be better than all those energy drinks filled with artificial flavours and sweeteners. But then, most of the people who consume coconut water don’t actually need such a huge amount of electrolytes since they are not athletes. (7) And what happens when you have electrolytes in your body and you don’t work out?
